Monitors

It is unnecessary to have more than two monitors for trading when using the DayTradingCourse.com methodology. Less is more.

The most popular monitor setup for a desktop computer is a pair of 24" or 25.5" flat panel monitors (1920 X 1200 native resolution, also known as WUXGA) with DVI or HDMI inputs. These have come down in price and typically cost less than $349 each.

If you want to add an external monitor to the laptop above, buy a 22" flat panel that has 1680 X 1050 (WSXGA+) or a 24", 25.5", or 26" flat panel that has 1920 X 1200 (WUXGA) native resolution and that uses a DVI or HDMI cable.

If you already have monitors you would like to use, make sure they meet the minimum specifications. The minimum satisfactory resolution for charting is 1680 x 1050. A lower resolution monitor can be used for order entry, web browsing, email, etc.

There are two types of inputs on monitors: analog and digital. Most of the flat panel monitors that you'd buy for trading will have both. Digital comes in either DVI or HDMI. For trading you would want to use the DVI or HDMI input. My current recommendation is a dual monitor card in the computer with Dual DVI or Dual HDMI outputs, connected with appropriate digital cables to two Flat Panels that have corresponding DVI or HDMI inputs. It is acceptable to use DVI-HDMI adapters as there is no signal conversion or loss of video quality.

When comparing flat panels of the size we use, the specs are almost always acceptable. The important consideration then becomes the warranty. Most have a 3 year warranty.

For reference purposes, here's a list of common display resolutions and their graphic abbreviations. The two most common that we use are in bold face.

Call Paul Quillen at 770-382-9656 if you have any questions about day trading computers or mulitiple monitor setups.

Trading Computer Specifications Summary

The critical components to your trading computer are:
Fast processor
Plenty of RAM
Windows XP or 7: 32 or 64 bit*
Dual DVI or Dual HDMI video board
Hard drive size is not important

The most important component in your computer is a fast video board. If during your training you find that changing between charts is a little slow, it’s no problem to get a faster video board from our local dealer. Also, if you use a multiple monitor video board, make sure it’s fast and has Dual DVI or Dual HDMI jacks. DVI and HDMI are identical, signal wise (the connectors are different), except HDMI adds audio. So either is fine on the computer and either is fine on the monitor. Adapter cables to go from one to the other are easy to find.

* All our trading software is 32 bit and works fine on either a 32 bit or 64 bit computer.

Trading Laptop Specifications Summary

In addition to the specifications for the desktop computer listed above, your trading laptop needs a DVI or HDMI video jack for an external monitor.

The native resolution of the monitor in the laptop's lid is the most important specification. Many laptops can go to a higher resolution than their native resolution, but at the higher resolution they don’t look right. So if you buy a laptop for your charting computer, its preferred “native” resolution would be 1920 x 1200 WUXGA 17” monitor.

If you want a laptop computer, we recommend you order the custom designed laptop above, or call me and I'll help you find one locally that will work. The number one problem we've found with with most off-the-shelf laptop computers is a low monitor resolution. The second problem with most off-the-shelf laptop computers is that the external monitor jack is frequently analog, not DVI or HDMI (digital). When looking for a day trading laptop, the category of laptops that daytrading requires would be considered "Gaming Laptops" due to the larger and better quality screen size, snappy graphics cards, and high performance processors to handle streaming data.

You may wish to go to Laptop Computer Specs to see the full list of recommended laptop (notebook) computer specifications, as well as factors to consider when deciding between a laptop and a desktop computer.

Call Paul Quillen at 770-382-9656 (Eastern Time Zone) or email us if you have any questions about day trader computers, mulitple monitor setups, or daytrading laptop computers.
