Monitors
The most popular monitor setup for a desktop computer is a pair of 24" or 25.5" flat panel monitors (1920 X 1200 native resolution, also known as WUXGA) with DVI (digital) inputs. These have come down in price and typically cost less than $349 each.
Note that the Trader/Gamer Xtreme computer comes with a pair of Samsung 25.5" wide screen flat panels (1920 X 1200 native resolution each), but computers #1, #2, #3, & #4 come without monitors.
If you want to add an external monitor to the laptop above, buy a 22" flat panel that has 1680 X 1050 (WSXGA+) or a 24", 25.5", or 26" flat panel that has 1920 X 1200 (WUXGA) native resolution and that uses a DVI cable.
If you already have monitors you would like to use, make sure they meet the minimum specifications. The minimum satisfactory resolution for charting is 1680 x 1050. A lower resolution monitor can be used for order entry, web browsing, email, etc.
There are two types of inputs on monitors, analog and digital. Most of the flat panel monitors that you'd buy for trading will have both. You’d want to use the DVI input. My current recommendation is a dual monitor card in the computer with DUAL DVI outputs, connected with digital cables to two Flat Panels that have DVI inputs.
Finally, when comparing flat panels, you want the largest viewing angle, the highest brightness, and the highest contrast. The most important for ease of viewing is high contrast, with a minimum contrast of 700:1. And, keep in mind that the size given is its viewable diagonal measurement: 19" flat panel has a 19" viewable diagonal. The other important thing to consider is the length of the warranty on the monitor. Most have a 3 year warranty. However, as a practical matter, all of the monitors that you'd consider for trading have acceptable specs if they have a DVI input.
For reference purposes, here's a list of common display resolutions and their graphic abbreviations. The two most common that we use are in bold face.
Call Paul Quillen at 770-382-9656 if you have any questions about monitors.
Trading Computer Specifications Summary
The most important component in your computer is the video board. It should be a fast one. If during your training, you find that changing between charts is a little slow, it’s no problem to get a faster video board from our local dealer. Also, if you use a multiple monitor video board, make sure it’s very fast and snappy, and has DVI outputs for flat panels.
We strongly recommend Windows 7 Home Edition 32 bit for trading computers. Windows Vista is not recommended for trading computers.
Get a 32 bit computer. Do not get a 64 bit computer. All the above computers are 32 bit except the Trader/Gamer Xtreme which is 64 bit which is appropriate for a gamer computer.
As an aside, there is no need for (and we don’t recommend) a wireless keyboard or a wireless mouse. You will be sitting in front of the monitor, not across the room. You would hate to lose a lot of money if in the middle of a trade, the mouse or keyboard battery failed.
Trading Laptop Specifications Summary
In addition to the specifications for the desktop computer listed above, your trading laptop needs a DVI (not analog) video jack for an external monitor.
The native resolution of the monitor in the laptop's lid is the most important specification. Many laptops can go to a higher resolution than their native resolution, but at the higher resolution they don’t look right. So if you bring a laptop for your charting computer, make sure its “native” resolution is 1920 x 1200, aka WUXGA, and it should be a 17” monitor.
I've never seen an acceptable laptop computer sold at a retail store. If you want a laptop computer, either order the one above, or call me and I'll help you get one that will work. The number one problem with retail store laptop computers is a low monitor resolution. The second problem with retail store laptop computers is that the external monitor jack is frequently analog, not DVI. The third problem with computer store laptop computers is that they come with Windows Vista. We want Windows 7 Home Edition 32 bit. Our recommended laptop computer comes with Windows 7 Home Edition 32 bit.
