ONLINE TRAINING

Training online is very effective using a combination of training materials shipped to you and GoToMeeting. You'll still receive all the same training instruction you would have in person, its just conducted remotely. And, of course, the training is still conducted One-on-One... just you and your Instructor.

If you are considering online training, we will need to determine if your Internet connection is adequate to handle it. Please go to www.speedtest.net and run the test using the closest city (usually the recommended city). Then email us the down speed, the up speed and the ping time (latency). We'll need those three numbers before we can agree to online training.

How Online Training Works

We will use www.GoToMeeting.com, which allows your Instructor to view your computer screen, you both take turns using the mouse and keyboard, and provides the audio as well. The training will be conducted on your computer and will be visible to both you and your Instructor during the GoToMeeting session. We'll use this to set up your computer and to teach you. This is how you'll watch the markets together and mark up charts. Prior to your training date, we'll email you instructions, which is a simple download and login on your end. Once the GoToMeeting session has completed, your computer is no longer accessible. And, there's no cost to you to use GoToMeeting.

For audio, we usually use VOIP teleconference feature within GoToMeeting so you'll need either headphones with a microphone, or a separate microphone and headphones to speak to and hear your instructor. This same microphone & headphones/speaker setup will also be used during the Daily Recap Webinars at the end of each trading day.

A high quality desktop USB microphone with separate headphones is what we've found works best. So, you would use two pieces: an external USB microphone, which you will use to talk to your Instructor; and a pair of lightweight foam-padded headphones or ear buds for listening to your Instructor (see fig 1. below). Although some people prefer a USB headset made for the computer with a boom microphone on it (see fig 2. below), we've found that even the best of them become uncomfortable after an hour or so. Both of these setups will provide the best quality connection. Please note that external speakers, laptop built-in microphones and speakers, and webcam microphones usually are not effective, create feedback noise and give poor quality connections. To find the recommended microphone, do an internet search on "Logitech USB Desktop Microphone" with the quotation marks. This recommended microphone can usually be found for a price of US$19.95. If you are in the United States and have a landline phone, it is at the discretion of your Instructor to call you instead of using VOIP during your training sessions. In this case, we recommend using a two ear telephone headset as holding the handset gets tiresome and non-full-duplex speakerphones cut off with background noise. If your Instructor opts to call you, there's no additional cost to you.

FAQ

Q: I'm trying to decide between training in-person and online. What are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

A: The advantages to training in-person is that you get that more personal connection - face-to face, you and Paul spend nearly every minute together, including lunch, which allows for more discussion time. Also, when here, students can focus easier during the training and in the evenings when doing the homework because they are away from their daily distractions. The main advantage to online training is the travel savings. One disadvantage to online training is the lessened interaction. You'll still spend nearly every minute together, with the exception of lunch - you'll break for lunch and meet back. Paul includes conversation time during the online training to build that personal rapport, so you're still developing the student-mentor connection, but it is harder for him to tell if you're "getting it", as in person, he can tell from looking at you if you're not getting it. Also, for our worldwide students the time difference; you will need to train during market hours. Of course, we can adjust the schedule slightly to help you, but eventually, you will need to be on the market's schedule for live trading. For both training options, you receive all the same course material, it is taught the same and your understanding is tested effectively - just using different methods of delivery.

Q: It would be better for me if I don't have to do the whole training in a single week. Since I'm doing the training online, can I split up the 5 days?

A: Yes, we can adapt to most any schedule. If you need to split up your training week, we have found students do better when they have their first 3 days together. You can schedule days 4 & 5 later, optimally about a month after your initial training, but anytime within your year of mentoring.
